Ramayana Part 1: Release Date Locked, Full Cast, ₹4,000 Cr Budget & Box-Office Clash

Ramayana Part 1: Release Date Locked, Full Cast, ₹4,000 Cr Budget & Box-Office Clash

Ramayana: Part 1 finally has a date you can circle. After months of conflicting reports, the makers confirmed on October 11 that Nitesh Tiwari's two-part epic will release worldwide on November 5, 2026, with advance bookings opening on Dussehra (October 20). Ranbir Kapoor leads as Lord Rama, Yash plays Ravana, and Sai Pallavi stars as Sita in what is being mounted as the most expensive Indian film ever made.

Here's everything confirmed so far: the release date, full cast, budget, the clash picture, and when Part 2 arrives.

The Release Date Is Finally Locked

For weeks, nobody could agree on the date. Sony Pictures' international trailer said November 6. Producer Namit Malhotra kept pointing at a Diwali window. Some trade reports even suggested paid previews on November 4.

Then, on the first day of Navratri, the makers ended it. A new ensemble poster arrived with the line "Yeh Ram ke Yug ka Aarambh hai" — this is the beginning of Ram's era — and one clear sentence: in cinemas worldwide, across all premium formats, from November 5. The UK, South Africa and Mauritius are currently slated for November 6, while dates for China, Japan, South Korea and a few other markets are still undisclosed, according to trade reporting.

The film will open in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, with reports suggesting dubs in nearly 40 languages worldwide — a scale no Indian release has attempted before.

Who's Playing Whom: The Full Cast

The casting is the film's loudest statement. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama — and, according to the actor himself, a dual role that also includes Parashurama. Opposite him, KGF star Yash makes his Hindi film debut as Ravana, a piece of casting that instantly reframed the film as a pan-India event rather than a Bollywood one.

Sai Pallavi, one of the most respected actors of her generation, plays Sita. Director Nitesh Tiwari has said he stopped seeing two popular actors when he looked at Ranbir and Sai on set — he saw only Ram and Sita. Sunny Deol takes on Hanuman, and television star Ravi Dubey makes his film debut as Lakshman.

The bench runs deep: Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Shurpanakha, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, Sheeba Chadha as Manthara, Arun Govil as King Dasharatha — a lovely full-circle moment, given Govil played Ram himself in the iconic 1987 television series — plus Anupam Kher, Vivek Oberoi, Kunal Kapoor and Adinath Kothare in key roles.

One detail worth noting: Tiwari has said the film will not flatten Ravan into a villain. The character will be shown as warrior, musician, king and Shiva devotee. That single choice tells you what kind of adaptation this wants to be.

The ₹4,000 Crore Question

Let's talk about the number everyone argues about. Co-producer Yash has confirmed that the combined budget for both parts stands at ₹4,000 crore, including global release and marketing — measured the way Hollywood counts costs. Trade estimates for Part 1 alone hover around ₹835 crore.

Either way, nothing in Indian cinema has been mounted at this scale. For context, Kalki 2898 AD was made for a reported ₹600 crore and RRR for around ₹550 crore. Yash addressed the skepticism head-on at the trailer launch in Bengaluru: "In India, there is a problem. People don't like it when you talk confidently... We need to prove the strength of the Indian film industry to the global market."

Conservative trade projections put Day 1 around ₹65–75 crore net in India and roughly ₹125 crore worldwide. But the real test will be the long run — devotional epics live or die on family audiences returning across weeks, not on opening-day fireworks.

Zimmer Meets Rahman, and the Global Play

The music alone is historic: Hans Zimmer and A. R. Rahman composing together, Zimmer's first full-fledged Indian film score. The first song has already been released, with vocals by Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal.

On the visuals, eight-time Oscar-winning DNEG leads the VFX pipeline, and the film was shot for IMAX — reportedly the first Indian film to get a worldwide ScreenX release as well. Filming ran from April 2024 to July 2025 at Film City, Mumbai, on sets built across 12 acres.

The global ambition is not subtle. The first-look teaser took over Times Square in New York. Sony Pictures is distributing across 45 international territories. A world premiere is planned at the Academy Museum, with guests asked to arrive in traditional attire. This is a production that wants the world to show up, not just India.

The Clash Nobody Wanted to Talk About

In India, Ramayana has the field almost entirely to itself — trade analysts describe an uncontested domestic window through November. Overseas, it's a different story.

Godzilla Minus Zero, Takashi Yamazaki's follow-up to the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One, rolls out globally on November 6 with early IMAX screenings from November 3. Both films were shot for IMAX. Premium large-format screens outside India are about to become very contested real estate, and that fight could decide how big Ramayana's international number gets.

Trade chatter also points to a Tamil Nadu skirmish with Suriya's cop thriller Scene, reportedly dated November 6, which could split screens in that market.

What Part 1 Covers — and When Part 2 Arrives

Ranbir Kapoor has said the Ramayana contains enough material for ten films. The makers settled on two, with a combined runtime reportedly crossing six hours. Part 1 covers Rama's journey through exile and Sita's abduction up to the gathering storm of the war — the foundation before the fire.

Ramayana: Part 2 is scheduled for Diwali 2027, exactly a year later. Kapoor has confirmed that shooting for Part 2 — at least his portions — is already about 50 percent complete, which suggests the second film is much further along than the usual sequel-at-announcement stage.

Why This Time Might Be Different

Indian audiences have been burned before. Adipurush (2023) arrived on a reported ₹600 crore budget with Prabhas as Raghava, opened big, and then collapsed under the weight of its dialogues and unfinished-looking VFX — the makers even revised lines after release. That memory hangs over every frame of this production.

The difference, at least on paper, is the approach. Tiwari — the filmmaker behind Dangal — isn't modernizing the story; he's betting that today's technology is finally worthy of it. Producer Namit Malhotra has called the film a "modern classic," arguing that nobody should change something that isn't broken. No winking reinvention. No shortcuts on the spectacle. Just the epic, told at a scale the epic deserves.

Whether that bet pays off will be decided by audiences, not announcements. But here's what makes November 5 genuinely historic either way: no Indian film has ever asked this much of the global box office, or offered this much in return. Advance bookings open on Dussehra. The yug, as the poster says, begins then.
